My B.Tech Branch Selection Journey: A Cautionary Tale
Hi everyone,
I'm writing this blog to share my experience and advise everyone to think deeply before choosing a branch in B.Tech. I appeared for the JEE Mains exam in 2022 and achieved a decent percentile, around 97.2. This score enabled me to secure admissions in lower branches in top NITs. Additionally, I got a seat in LNMIIT Jaipur in Computer Science, one of the most prestigious private colleges.
The Initial Decision: LNMIIT Jaipur (CSE)
Initially, I decided to take admission in LNMIIT Jaipur as I was offered my desired branch, CSE. I thought if I could secure a higher branch like Electrical, Electronics, CS, IT, etc., I would switch to that particular NIT or government college. So, I joined LNMIIT Jaipur just two weeks before Diwali. During the Diwali holiday, CSAB results were announced, and I was offered the chemical engineering branch at MNIT Jaipur. I had to decide on that particular day whether I should choose chemical engineering or not since it was the last day of the decision. I decided to drop from CSAB counseling and continue with LNMIIT Jaipur as I got my desired branch, CSE, there. But suddenly, when I was about to withdraw my name from CSAB, I learned that the deadline for CSAB dropout had been extended by one day. So, I decided to take one more day to think about it.
The Switch: Chemical Engineering at MNIT Jaipur (A Mistake)
The next day, I decided to pursue Chemical Engineering at MNIT, Jaipur. My parents were strongly against it as they believed Chemical Engineering is a specialized branch and studying it alongside Computer Science would be extremely challenging. I had planned to manage both by taking online courses in CSE, but my parents advised against it, warning me of the difficulty. However, I didn't heed their advice and chose Chemical Engineering at MNIT Jaipur, dropping out from LNMIIT.
Reality Check: Mismatched Interests
A semester into MNIT, reality struck. Chemical Engineering's workload and complex subjects, combined with my lack of interest, proved overwhelming. The new education scheme, starting core subjects in the first semester, added to the challenge. While the first year was manageable, the second year exposed the gravity of my mistake. I can't pursue placements in core Chemical Engineering jobs because I know I wouldn't enjoy them. I don't like Chemical Engineering at all, finding it very boring.
Lessons Learned: Choosing the Right Branch
Now, after four semesters, I struggle to manage both branches. My CGPA reflects this, dropping from 8.5 to 7.96 in the second year. This experience highlighted the importance of:
Prioritizing Passion over Prestige: Choose a branch that excites you, not just a college's reputation.
Understanding the Curriculum: Research the curriculum and workload of each branch.
Valuing Parental Guidance: Their insights can be invaluable for your future.
Do Your Research & Follow Your Passion
Research B.Tech branches thoroughly. Consider the curriculum, job prospects, and crucially, your own interests. Don't be swayed by college rankings alone. Finally, value your parents' guidance; they want the best for you.
My story serves as a cautionary tale, urging future students to make informed B.Tech branch selections.
