Singer/songwriter/producer Sean Garrett has been responsible for creating hits like Usher‘s “Yeah,” Beyonce‘s “Ring The Alarm” and Ciara‘s “Goodies.” But it doesn’t mean the hit-making machine hasn’t had some blunders along the way as well.
Last year, Nicki Minaj released what was then dubbed her first single, a track titled “Massive Attack,” produced by Garrett. But the track failed to meet radio and chart expectations, and eventually was dropped entirely from Minaj’s debut album, “Pink Friday.”
According to Garrett, the success — or lack thereof — of the track was “out of my control. I was only able to do as much as I was allowed to do. Sometimes you have to step back and get off the wheel,” he says. “I didn’t have control of the entire creative process. A lot of [other] artists trust me enough and allow me to do what I know is best to do as a producer.”
Disappointment aside, there is no love lost for the Young Money rapstress, says Garrett. “I’m very happy to have worked with her, I wish her the best and am happy she’s doing what she’s doing,” he says, adding that their relationship at the moment is “cool. Hopefully [the album] turns out as she hopes it to be.”

Garrett isn’t letting the mishap slow him down at all. He recently signed a deal with Columbia Records and Jay-Z‘s Roc Nation, the latter which earlier in his career christened him “The Pen” for his ability to write hit records. “It’s a beautiful situation,” he says.
He also recently released his “Inkwell” mixtape and is prepping his first stateside as-yet-untitled album. First single “I Feel Loved” features Drake and there’s also a “surprise” release coming in a couple of days, says Garrett. Additionally, a mixtape single titled “So Geeked” was released a couple of weeks ago, and the remix to it, featuring Busta Rhymes, Ludacris and Twista, was released yesterday (Oct. 19).
As if that weren’t enough, Garrett is currently working with Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Alexandra Burke, Britney Spears and newcomer K. Michelle. Although details were limited, there are also a number of branding deals in the works.
“I got some big things coming,” says Garrett cryptically. “Just know that you’ll see Sean Garrett in many different lights soon.”
