Title: Monolithically Integrated 3D Silicon Photonic Platforms

Abstract: This talk presents my group’s progress in foundry-compatible, monolithically integrated multilayer silicon nitride-on-silicon (SiN-on-Si) photonic platforms. These SiN-on-Si photonic platforms contain several waveguide levels, and light can be routed vertically between the layers to realize 3D photonic devices and circuits. I will present our work on passive and active elements, including ultra-low-loss waveguide crossings, multi-layer grating couplers, polarization management components, and ultra-efficient Si depletion modulators. These advancements make possible the implementation of very large-scale photonic circuits for applications such as optical switching, phased arrays, and dense sensor systems. Biography Joyce Poon is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Toronto, where she holds the Canada Research Chair in Integrated Photonic Devices. She and her team specialize in integrated photonics on silicon. Dr. Poon obtained the Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Caltech in 2007 and 2003 respectively, and the B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science (physics option) from the University of Toronto in 2002. Recognitions she has received include an ECE Department Teaching Award (2017), OFC Top-Scored Paper (2017), the McCharles Prize for Early Research Career Distinction (2013), MIT TR35 (2012), and the IBM Faculty Award (2010, 2011). She is a Fellow of the Optical Society.
