Review types and timelines
Full REB Review
- Review process: Reviewed by full REB during in-person monthly meetings.
- Criteria: Research projects involving more than minimal risk, coercion, or deception. Default procedure for all research projects involving human participants (see TCPS 2, Article 6.12).
- Submission dates: First working day of each month (except July)
- Number of copies needed: 1
- Evaluation time: 6 weeks +
Minimal Risk Review
- Review process: Review delegated to 2 REB members + Chair.
- Criteria: TCPS 2, Chapter 2 defines this as "research in which the probability and magnitude of possible harms implied by participation in the research is no greater than those encountered by participants in those aspects of their everyday life that relate to the research."
- Submission dates: First working day of each month (except July)
- Number of copies needed: 1
- Evaluation time: 4-6 weeks
Expedited Review
- Review process: Review delegated to REB Chair.
- Criteria:
- Initial review: Minimal risk project already approved by another TCPS 2-compliant REB; project only using non-public secondary data; minimal risk project done in the context of a Directed studies course.
- Ongoing review: Modification requests (unless above minimal risk) and renewals of ethics approval.
- Submission dates: No submission deadlines - can be submitted at any time.
- Number of copies needed: 1
- Evaluation time: 2-3 weeks
Application for Course Outline
- Review process: Review delegated to REB Chair
- Criteria: For courses requiring students to conduct small research projects within the context of the course (excluded Directed studies courses). Must be minimal risk. Request must be submitted by the course instructor.
- Submission dates: No submission deadline, but must be before class begins.
- Number of copies needed: 1
- Evaluation time: 2-3 weeks
Application for secondary use of data
- Review process: Review conducted by the Director of the Office of Research Ethics and Integrity.
- Criteria: Project involving a uOttawa researcher that received approval from a University of Ottawa-affiliated hospital (see Internal Guidelines Article 1.14) for complete list); no research activities conducted at uOttawa.
- Submission dates: No submission deadline - can be submitted at any time.
- Number of copies needed: 1
- Evaluation time: 1 week
