117 members of the Canadian legal academic community signed an open letter to Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard and Justice Minister Stéphanie Vallée on Wednesday to voice their criticism and disapproval of Quebec’s Bill 62: An Act to foster adherence to State religious neutrality and, in particular, to provide a framework for requests for accommodations on religious grounds in certain bodies.

Professor Ian Kerr has renewed his Canada Research Chair in Ethics, Law and Technology, bringing $1.5 million to uOttawa to develop Robotics and AI Law and Policy.  His research will focus on the merger of humans and machines and the ethical, legal and social ramifications of this union.

Professor Teresa Scassa has been awarded a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Information Law and Policy. This Chair will allow her to continue her innovative research advancing knowledge and informing public policy-making on issues of the ownership, control, and transparency of information and data within the evolving context of the e-Society.  With the Chair, she will earn $1.4 million over the next seven years.

This year’s recipient of the Environmental Justice Research Fellowship is Danielle Gallant, a Master of Laws candidate at the University of Ottawa. Danielle will be working on the climate justice case study. 

The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, announced appointments to the Judicial Advisory Committee (JAC) for the Tax Court of Canada on Friday, October 27, 2017. Faculty of Law, Common Law Professor Vern Krishna was selected as one of the appointees to the Committee.

Inspired by the desire to write more and the need to create a space for collective discussion about the challenges that surround research and writing, the Research Office invites faculty, researchers and postdoctoral fellows from the Faculty of Law to join our writing group.

Common Law Alumnus Brandon D. Stewart has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue LL.M. studies at Yale Law School for the 2017-2018 academic year. He is one of only 12 students to receive one of Canada’s most prestigious graduate scholarships.

Today, Jacques Frémont, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ottawa announced that, at its meeting on October 19, 2017, the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors approved the appointment of Adam Dodek as Dean of the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section.
