Access the uOttawa network from home: VPN Client
1. Get the VPN client
Employees only: To access the uOttawa network from home, you need to install the VPN client on your off-campus computer
- On campus only Download and install the appropriate VPN client, from the software zone either onto your laptop or onto a USB key for transfer to your desktop at home
2. Enter your login credentials

Session timeouts
There are two automatic timeouts set for the VPN. Your session will be disconnected if:
- there has been no network activity* during the last 30 minutes OR
- you have been actively connected for 300 minutes (5 hours = max. per session)
If you get disconnected and wish to continue working using the VPN, simply log back on using the VPN Client.
*Typing out an email message does not constitute network activity. Sending or receiving email creates activity on the network.
Installing and running the VPN client for Windows
Connecting to uOttawa VPN
- Launch the Cisco AnyConnect client by clicking on the AnyConnect icon, which can be found in the Windows Taskbar, or in the Windows Start Menu.
- Select Remote Access in the drop-down menu and click Connect.
- In the Group drop-down menu, select Remote_Access.
- Enter a capital E, followed by your employee number, without the leading 100 or 1000; and your uoAccess password. Click OK to establish your VPN connection.
- Once the connection is established, click Accept to close the window.
Disconnecting from uOttawa VPN
- In the Windows Taskbar, click the AnyConnect icon.
- Click the Disconnect button.
Changing the interface language
The Cisco AnyConnect client displays messages according to the language chosen in the System Locale setting, which can be changed as per the following instructions. Note that this setting is different from the Windows Display Language setting.
- Windows 7 or Vista: access the Control Panel and select Region and Language from the left menu.
Windows 8 or 10: access the Control Panel and select Region from the menu. - Select the Administrative / Administration tab and click the Change system locale button.
- In the drop-down list, select either the English (Canada) or French (Canada), according to your preference.
- Click OK to close each of the windows.
Installing and running the VPN Client for Macintosh
System Requirements
Make sure that your system meets all of the following requirements before proceeding:
- You must have a wireless card or adapter installed and running properly.
- You must be located in an area serviced by a wireless access point.
- You will also need your employee or student number as well as your uoAccess password in order to authenticate to the wireless network.
Downloading and Installing a VPN Profile

Download the VPN software by visiting http://it.uottawa.ca/software/vpn.
- Click VPN Client for Mac OS.
- Click the appropriate link under the Download heading (except in special cases, this will be the link labelled with “off-campus, employees only”). The file will be automatically downloaded.

In most cases, immediately after the aforementioned file is downloaded, a window with the title Profiles will appear. Click the Continue button.
If the Profiles window does not appear, then open your Downloads folder, and double-click the downloaded file (named Off-Campus.mobileconfig or similar) to open it. Click the Continue button. -
In the Username text entry box, enter your uoAccess username (typically a capital E followed by your employee number, without the leading 1 and 0 characters). Click the Install button.

Enter the Administrator password for your computer, then press the return key or click OK.

The Profiles window will show that the VPN profile is now installed. Click the back ( < ) button to show the main System Preferences window.

Click the Network icon.

In the left side of the window, click the VPN network connection “Off-Ca…ees only”, which will be shown with a lock icon. Click the Show VPN status in menu bar checkbox, to enable it. Close the window.
Connecting to uOttawa VPN

In the menu bar, click the VPN icon. From the drop-down menu, click the appropriate VPN profile, typically Connect Off-Campus (Employees only).

Enter your uoAccess password, then press the return key or click OK. A new window will display a VPN Connection welcome message. Click OK.
Disconnecting from uOttawa VPN

In the menu bar, click the VPN icon.

In the drop-down menu, click the item for the appropriate VPN profile, typically Disconnect Off-Campus (Employees only).
Installing and running the VPN Client for Android
Installing and Configuring a VPN Profile
- Open Google Play. Search for AnyConnect . In the list of search results, tap AnyConnect, by Cisco Systems, Inc. Tap INSTALL.
- Tap ACCEPT to grant the required access permissions to the AnyConnect app.
- Once the AnyConnect app is installed, tap OPEN.
- Tap OK to accept the AnyConnect license agreement.
- In the main AnyConnect screen, Tap Connection.
- Tap Add New VPN Connection.
- In the Connection Editor screen:
- Tap Description. Enter a description of your choice (uOttawa is recommended).
- Tap Server Address. Enter uovpn.uottawa.ca . Tap Done.
Tap the Android system Back button (usually located at the bottom-left of the screen).
- Beside AnyConnect VPN, tap the switch control to turn the connection to ON.
- On the Untructed VPN Server! screen, tap Change Settings.
- Tap the checkbox next to Block Untrusted Servers, to disable the option. Then tap the Android system Back button (usually located at the bottom-left of the screen) twice.
- Beside AnyConnect VPN, tap the switch control again.
- In the Security Warning window, tap Continue.
- A credentials screen will appear:
- Tap the Group drop-down list, then tap the Remote_Access item.
- Tap the Username text entry field. Enter a capital E, followed by your employee number without the leading 1 and 0 characters (eg: if your employee number is 100123456 enter E123456).
- Tap the Password text entry field. Enter the password for your uoCampus account (usually the same as the password for your computer and Exchange email account).
- When the VPN connection is successfully activated, a confirmation message will appear. Tap Accept.
- A Connection Request will appear, tap OK.
- Tap the AnyConnect VPN switch control one more time, to deactivate the VPN connection.
Connecting to uOttawa VPN
- Open the AnyConnect app, by tapping the app icon in the Android Launcher screen.
- Tap the AnyConnect VPN switch control to turn it to the ON position.
- A Security Warning will appear, tap Continue.
- In the credentials screen:
- In the Group drop-down menu, if the Remote_Access item is not already selected, tap the drop-down menu, then tap the Remote_Access item.
- Tap the Username text entry field. Enter a capital E, followed by your employee number without the leading 1 and 0 characters (eg: if your employee number is 100123456 enter E123456).
- Tap the Password text entry field. Enter the password for your uoCampus account (usually the same as the password for your computer and Exchange email account).
- When the VPN connection is successfully activated, a confirmation message will appear. Tap Accept.
The switch control will now be in the On position, indicating that the VPN connection is active.
- A key icon will appear in the Android Notification Area, as long as the VPN connection is active. You may close the AnyConnect app if you wish. The VPN connection will remain active in the background.
Disconnecting from uOttawa VPN
- Open the AnyConnect app, by tapping the app icon in the Android Launcher screen.
- Tap the AnyConnect VPN switch control to deactivate the VPN client. The switch control will now be in the Off position, indicating that the VPN connection is not active.

Downloading and Installing the VPN Profile

Open your web browser app and enter the URL http://it.uottawa.ca/software.

Scroll down to the list of available software. Tap the VPN Client link. Tap VPN Profiles for iPhone and iPad. Under the Download now header, tap the link for the VPN profile that you wish to download and install (in most cases, this will be the profile labelled (off campus, employees only).

A message will appear to ask if you will allow the website to access your Settings, tap Allow.

The Install Profile tab in your settings will appear. Tap Install.

Enter the lock screen passcode for your iPhone or iPad, then tap Done.

Tap Install.

Tap Install a second time.

Enter your VPN username (in most cases, this will be a capital E, followed by your employee number, without the leading 1 and 0 digits, ex. E123456). Tap Next.

Enter your VPN password (the password for your uoAccess account/Exchange email). Tap Next.

Tap Done.
Connecting to uOttawa VPN

Open the Settings for your iPhone or iPad. Tap VPN.

Tap the switch icon next to Status, to connect to the VPN.

Enter your VPN password (in most cases, the password for your uoAccess account/Exchange email). Tap OK.

A message will appear, to indicate that the VPN connection is active. Tap OK.
Disconnecting from uOttawa VPN

Open the Settings for your iPhone or iPad. Tap VPN.

Tap the switch icon next to Status, to disable the VPN connection.
