Eric Crighton, Chair of our department founded EduTOX in 2016, a national video contest. He is now the co-leader of this great initiative to raise awareness about how we can reduce health impacts from exposure to harmful toxins or adapt to climate change.

Territorial identities in Gatineau, 15 years after the municipal amalgamation.

Louis-Philippe Morin recently submitted his master's thesis at the University of Ottawa's Department of Geography, Geomatics on territorial identity in Gatineau 15 years after the municipal amalgamation. The results show that citizens who have experienced the merger do not identify strongly with the new city. See TVA interview

Michelle Chaput, a PhD student in the Physical Geography program, spent the afternoon with the teachers and the Can Geo Education team, and shared her views on the importance of geographical education and the need for fieldwork activities to be included in curricula. 

The students of the GEG4100 glaciology course are currently visiting Iceland to put their knowledge on the ice into practice.

The office of the Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG) has moved at the Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics at uOttawa! 

Can the past predict the future? When it comes to climate change, records of temperature variations over thousands — or even millions — of years reveal precious clues on long-term trends and how the environment will react to future temperature changes. New work by an international team of scientists has found that ice core records documenting thousands of years of climate change reveal higher temperatures than previously determined in the Arctic, one of the Earth’s most fragile ecosystems.

The University of Ottawa is proud to name associate professors Jackie Dawson (Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics) and Pascal Audet (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences) as the recipients of its Young Researcher of the Year Award. The two professors are being recognized for their exceptional contributions to research, as well as for their role as exemplary mentors and teachers.

Congratulations to our runner-up Laura Thomson, PhD Candidate, Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics, University of Ottawa. She is a member of the Laboratory for Cryospheric Research, which monitors and seeks to understand the frozen earth (glaciers, ice caps, ice shelves, snow and sea ice). Laura studies the dynamic response of glaciers to long term changes in mass balance.
