Spam FAQ for Mailbox
Why should I use the anti-spam tool?
Using the anti-spam tool will greatly diminish the amount of spam (junk) mail that arrives in your Inbox.
Will I lose any valid e-mail if I use the anti-spam tool?
Check your Spam folder to see if any valid email has been flagged as spam. Spam filtering is not 100% accurate. We recommend that you initially use a level of filtering set to 5. Once you are confident that you aren’t losing any valid e-mail, you can adjust the settings.
What happens if I choose to “Disable the anti-spam tool?”
If you choose to disable the anti-spam tool, you will receive all email (including spam) in your Inbox. In an extreme case, this means you could possibly receive 200+ pieces of spam mail per day.
I have found valid e-mail in my Spam folder. How do I resolve this issue?
Go to www.uottawa.ca/mailadmin and adjust the level of filtering.
I am still receiving a large amount of spam in my Inbox. How do I resolve this issue?
Go to www.uottawa.ca/mailadmin and adjust the level of filtering.
**Reminder: The anti-spam tool is not 100% accurate. Be aware that you could still receive spam from time to time.
How much of my total disk quota will the Spam folder use?
Spam mail is normally quite small. On average, 3 weeks worth of spam should take up no more that 1-2% of your disk quota.
How can I prevent my own e-mails from being perceived as spam by someone else’s anti-spam tool?
Avoid using techniques that are often associated with spam such as:
- html code
- large fonts
- many colours
- incomplete or incorrect mailer settings i.e. make sure your full name appears in the configuration of your email software
