Faculty of Law Researchers Play Key Roles in Landmark Supreme Court Ruling in Douez v. Facebook
On June 23, 2017, the Supreme Court of Canada issued a landmark decision in Douez v. Facebook, ruling that non-negotiated take-it-or-leave it contracts should not always be enforced by the courts, particularly where important rights, as privacy rights, might be lost by doing so. The decision – a victory for all Canadians – was made possible through contributions from the Centre for Law, Technology and Society at the University of Ottawa including Common Law’s Marina Pavlović, Jeremy de Beer and Michael Geist, CIPPIC’s David Fewer and Tamir Israel, and several students who contributed to each step of the process.

CIPPIC and BCCLA Earn CIRA Grant for Guidebook on Digital Devices Crossing the Border
uOttawa’s Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) and the BC Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) have earned a grant from the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) to produce a guidebook and online resource to help people protect their privacy and personal data when crossing the U.S.-Canada border.
