Specific Requirements

Please verify if you meet the specific requirements of the chosen program, including the language requirements prior to sending your application.

Deadlines for submitting an application

To know the deadlines for submitting an application, verify the specific requirements of the selected program.

Gather all required documents before sending your application

Make sure to gather all required documents before sending your application. Each program of study requires specific documents for admission. The complete list of the documents required for admission to your program of studies as well as the mailing address are available on the Specific requirements page.

  • All documents and transcripts submitted to the University of Ottawa become the property of the University and will not be returned.
  • We are unable to process incomplete applications. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all required documentation is submitted correctly and promptly.

Most courses at the University of Ottawa are given in English, French or both languages. Therefore, you must master one of the two official languages to be admitted. Verify the language requirements to the chosen program prior to sending your application.

Once you have identified the language tests required for admission to the selected program, refer to the table "Proof of language proficiency" to access online tests and the minimal marks required.

Proof of language proficiency: English-language tests
Proof of language proficiency: French-language tests
Transcripts

In your application, you must submit an official academic transcript from each establishment of higher education that you have attended. For this purpose, a transcript is considered official only if it is received in a university envelope which is sealed and signed on the flap by the official person in the office issuing the transcript. These must be returned to you signed and sealed, for submission with the application package.

If the transcript and degree certificate are not in English or French, a certified translation (signed and stamped/sealed) must be submitted.

  • All transcripts will be verified for authenticity.
  • All transcript information is confidential; envelopes must not be opened.
  • Transcripts must show all courses, all marks and the awarding of degree(s).
  • Previous or current University of Ottawa students do not need to submit a transcript of their studies at the University of Ottawa. Professional programs in rehabilitation require all transcripts, including those from uOttawa.
  • All documents and transcripts submitted to the University of Ottawa become the property of the University and will not be returned.
Letters of reference

Please refer to the specific program you are applying to for details on the number of reference letters required, if any.

Referees should be from qualified academic scholars attesting to, and documenting, an applicant’s potential for graduate level study/research unless the graduate program identifies that professional references are acceptable and/or required.

Step 1:

  • Confirm that your referees are available and are willing to provide you with a reference.
  • Confirm that the referee’s email address you will be submitting on the application is accurate.
  • If you plan to use the same referee for multiple program choices, your referees will receive separate electronic reference reports that are specific to each of the programs. Please inform your referee that they will be receiving separate emails for each of your program choices.
  • Reference reports are confidential and may be verified for authenticity. It is the applicant’s responsibility to inform the referees of the program deadline dates and to monitor their document status on their portal account to ensure that the reports have been submitted prior to the program deadline.

Once your application is received at the University of Ottawa (approximately 1 week following your online submission and payment of the application fee), an automatic email acknowledging receipt of your application will be sent out to you. The email will contain your student number, uoAccessID and password to access your uoZone account (your student services portal).

You will then be able to access your uoZone account, to enter the name and email addresses of your referees.  To do so, you will need to log in to your uoZone account, go to the section "Admission file", and then click on your program. This will bring you to the list of required documents.  Within that list, you will find the link to add your referees. Be sure that all the referee information you have provided is correct. Once you have added your referees, an email will be sent out to them to access the recommendation form and submit it electronically.

Find a thesis supervisor

Students admitted to a master's program with thesis or research paper, or to a doctoral program must choose a supervisor who will guide them throughout the writing of their thesis or dissertation.

Students can refer to their academic unit website to learn more about professors allowed to supervise theses in their field of study.
