How do I access my courses?

We offer a variety of flexible online options for you to access courses, including our Video On Demand service, a classroom live stream and our on-campus viewing room. We also have a number of web-based courses, which are offered through a course website.

Visit our Access Your Courses page for a full list of the options available.

Exams and assignments

Students in CUOL sections must fulfill course work according to the course deadlines. Assignments and course work are usually submitted online through cuLearn. If an assignment has to be submitted physically, distance students can mail it to the department, postmarked by the due date.

Most CUOL courses have proctored midterms and/or finals. Local students (within 100 km of campus) write these tests on-campus with the rest of the class. Distance students can arrange to write the midterms and exams at a distance with an approved proctor if they apply by the deadline – see the Examination Services page for more information. If no distance exam application is made, students are expected to write at Carleton.

Distance students

Living far away from campus doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the benefits of CUOL courses. Distance students can take CUOL courses via the Video On Demand service or register for our web-based courses.

When it comes to course work, you complete the course requirements in the same way and with the same deadlines as on-campus students. Assignments are usually submitted online, but if it has to be submitted physically, distance students can mail it to the department (postmarked by the due date). Graded papers and midterms can be returned by email to students who have applied for a distance exam. If you have not applied for a distance exam but are unable to come to campus to collect a paper, please contact us at cuol@carleton.ca to make alternate arrangements.

Midterms and exams can be written at a distance from Carleton only if you apply for this service. If you do not apply for distance exams, you are expected to write all exams at Carleton. Note that you must be in the CUOL section (T, V or R or web), not the on-campus section of the course, in order to apply for a distance exam. See our Examination Services page for more information.

To get a Carleton student card when you are a distance student, email a request to cuol@carleton.ca from your Carleton email account. Make sure to include your student number. CUOL will have a card made and mailed to you. As there will be no picture on the card, you would present it with a piece of government issued photo ID. You need to have a card made in order to access online Library resources.

There are a number of resources available for distance students, including:
