Matei Radulescu

Biography

Dr. Matei I. Radulescu completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in mechanical engineering at McGill University, where he studied experimentally the initiation, propagation and failure mechanisms of unsteady gaseous detonation waves.  Upon graduation in 2003, he visited Stanford University as a FQRNT postdoctoral fellow for one year to study pulse detonation engines propulsion systems.  For the following three years, he was a NSERC postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University, where he pursued fundamental studies on detonations and compressible jets.  Dr. Radulescu was the recipient of the Bernard Lewis Fellowship offered to outstanding young researchers by the Combustion Institute in 2004.

In November 2006, Dr. Radulescu joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa, where he funded the Detonation & Reactive Dynamics Laboratory.  His research interests are currently focused on the micro-scales of reactive flows and shock induced ignition phenomena in both gaseous and condensed phase reactive materials.  Current research activities include the study of the explosion safety of hydrogen storage, the study of the ignition mechanisms in unstable detonation waves, in non-premixed systems, and on fast reaction waves in binary metal combustion systems.  His research involves a combination of analytical approaches, experiments and state of the art CFD tools.  His research is currently funded by NSERC and Defence R&D Canada.  Dr. Radulescu teaches undergraduate courses in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer and advanced graduate courses in Combustion and Gas Dynamics. He is a board member of the Institute for Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems.
