Students in the Faculty of Engineering have been excelling in a variety of competitions over the past year and have won multiple awards.
PEO Student Paper Night competition
Two teams of talented students from uOttawa have won the PEO Student Paper Night competition, held on April 6, 2016. Teams of fourth-year undergraduate students from the University of Ottawa and Carleton University were given the chance to present and defend their projects in front of judges from the engineering community.
Mark Goodchild, a chemical engineering student, won a $500 prize for best individual presentation. He presented his thesis project performed last fall under the supervision of Dr. Mehrani and Dr. Thibault: “The Department is very proud of Mark! His achievements are the product of considerable hard work and unswerving dedication” said Dr. David Taylor, Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.
Congratulations to the second team, consisting of Alex Carriere, George Hamouch, Tessa Karunakaran, Ahmed Kawar, Estelle Nkamegue and Felix Boudreault, supervised by Dr. Sai Vanapalli, for their winning presentation at the PEO Papers Night. The outstanding performance of our students won uOttawa the Tom Foulkes Trophy for strongest university of the evening for a second year in a row: “Congratulations to our two teams, they have done an excellent job,” said Professor André Skaff from the Department of Civil Engineering.
The Student Paper Night competition is organised by the Ottawa Chapter of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), the licensing and regulating body for the field of engineering in Ontario
Best Graduate Student Paper
Aida Sharif Rohani, a former graduate student from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, co-supervised by Dr. Mehrani and Dr. Thibault, has been named the winner of the 2016 Award for Best Graduate Student Paper in The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering for her paper entitled: Comparison of in-situ recovery methods of gas stripping, pervaporation, and vacuum separation by multi-objective optimization for producing biobutanol via fermentation process. This award is presented for outstanding published work by a graduate student: “This is another great achievement from our department,” said Dr. Thibault.
Mike Sheflin Student Paper Competition
A Civil Engineering team has won the 2016 Mike Sheflin Student Paper Competition for showcasing their best efforts in the area of Public Works Designs. Their capstone project dealt with a New Interprovincial Bridge. The team consisted of: William Bell, Ryan Brockie, Mohammed Ghadban, Alexander Griffin, and Adrian Simpalean and was supervised by Dr. Elena Dragomirescu.
The Mike Sheflin Student Paper Competition is an annual event that features design projects from University of Ottawa and Carleton University students: “This is a civil engineering capstone design presentation competition between uOttawa and Carleton. Congratulations to the winning team and their supervisor!” said Colin Rennie, Department Chair.
