Welcome to the Advanced Cardiac Life Support Website 

The Faculty of the Department of Emergency Medicine provides regular Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) simulation training to undergraduate and postgraduate trainees, as well as community physicians, nurses, and allied health care providers. We provide an evidence-based approach to our education programs, and teach to the most current guidelines published. Our mannikins allow computer-based scenarios tailored to the needs of the learners. Course tuition fees covers the cost of administration, instruction, teaching materials, and our educational programs.

Our courses are very interactive and we provide extensive small-group hands-on training.  Our educators are leaders in the field of medical education. We provide a relaxed non-threatening environment focused on the needs of the learners. 

Course Objectives

The main focus of the course is to make you more comfortable and competent in recognizing and managing cardiac emergencies and cardiac arrest. Our goal is to have every participant successfully meet their personal learning objectives as well as fulfill the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada requirements. The core objectives of the HSFC and our courses that must be achieved to successfully complete the course are:

• demonstrate proficiency in Basic Life Support skills 
• recognize and manage respiratory arrest
• recognize and manage cardiac arrest
• recognize core ACLS rhythms: atrial fibrillation/flutter, AV heart block, ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation, PEA, asystole
• demonstrate knowledge of the drug therapy for the core ACLS rhythms
• demonstrate effective team leader communication skills  

Course Preparation:    

• The vast majority of our participants are able to successfully complete the course objectives by the end of the training session. Preparation, however, is essential. Go to Course Preparation for details on how to prepare for this course.

CPD Credits:

• RCPSC: 2 credits per hour of course under section 2, Traineeships.  
• CCFP: 1.5 day Provider Course: 8 Mainpro-C or 16 Mainpro-M1 credits. 1 day Update Course: 4 Mainpro-C or 8 Mainpro-M1 credits.
