Research centres and institutes

The main role of a research centre at the University of Ottawa is to foster excellence in research. Our many research centres function outside existing academic units, and are, with few exceptions, interdisciplinary in nature. This allows for research that can be more effectively accomplished outside a traditional graduate program.

The two principal objectives of research institutes are to:

  • pursue excellence in research and;
  • maintain first-class teaching programs at the graduate and/or undergraduate level.

Our research institutes function outside existing academic units and may be discipline-based or interdisciplinary in nature. In either case, they must encompass activities that can be more effectively accomplished outside a traditional graduate program.Learn more about establishing a research centre or institute, and requirements for annual and septennial reviews
