Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics

Congratulations to our runner-up Laura Thomson, PhD Candidate, Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics, University of Ottawa. She is a member of the Laboratory for Cryospheric Research, which monitors and seeks to understand the frozen earth (glaciers, ice caps, ice shelves, snow and sea ice). Laura studies the dynamic response of glaciers to long term changes in mass balance.

Jackie Dawson selected for membership to the prestigious Global Young Academy (GYA): The GYA is a group of outstanding young scientists and scholars from around the world providing a rallying point to lead international, interdisciplinary, and intergenerational dialogue with the goal to make global decision making evidence-based and inclusive.

In November-December 2015, Dr. Denis Lacelle of the Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics (Faculty of Arts) will be joining a team of international scientists to Lake Untersee, Antarctica. 

Two professors from the Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics each receive an Early Researcher Award the Government of Ontario.

Professor Lauriol was invited at the "Les années lumières", a Radio Canada  science radio show to talk about his book on ice formations found in local caves.  Listen to the interview here (in French Écoutez l'entrevue ici )

We are proud to announce that Professor Anne Gilbert is the recipient of the Professor of the Year award. Every year, since 1995, the Faculty of Arts recognizes a professor who excels in the three areas of teaching, research and service to the university community.

Third year environmental studies student Rosalind Ragetlie completed her third CO-OP placement at uOttawa, at the Department of Geography’s HEAL Laboratory.  The quality and detail of the documents she produced were mentioned by her manager.  One of the reports Rosalind was in charge of was submitted to a ministry, which shows the high quality of her work. Rosalind also took part in extracurricular projects related to food security and land use planning in Mexico, Benin and elsewhere in West Africa.  What’s more, despite the many activities she has been involved in throughout her time at university, she has continued to maintain a high average.

Congratulations to PhD student in Geography student Robert Way who has been selected as an International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) fellow for the Cryosphere Working Group.

Denis Lacelle, professor in the Department of Geography, has been awarded Young Researcher of the Year 2013 by the University of Ottawa. This award is accompanied by a $10,000 research grant.
