Vice-President, Research

This office oversees the administration of the many facets of research on campus, ensuring the efficiency and the effectiveness of the considerable investment represented by this work. This responsibility includes funding, equipment, and facilities, but above all a fundamental respect for the value of people—the expertise, talent, and imagination that breathe life into each and every endeavour.

As one of the country's leading research-intensive institutions, Canada's university is proud of the accomplishments that have been made possible by this emphasis on research. Vice-President, Research

Mona Nemer is the University of Ottawa’s Vice-President, Research since 2006 and a researcher in molecular biology.

Dr. Nemer has a PhD in bio-organic chemistry from McGill University. Prior to her arrival at the University of Ottawa, she was Professor of Pharmacology at the Université de Montréal, Director of the Cardiac Development Research Unit at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montréal (IRCM), and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Cardiovascular Cell Differentiation. At IRCM, she also served as Director of Academic Affairs and Executive Director of Planning and Development.

Information About the Key Services

Animal Care and Veterinary Service and Ethics
The Animal Care and Veterinary Service and Ethics (ACVS) team ensures that the use of animals in research and in teaching conforms to the most rigorous ethical standards that are compatible with the goals of science. The team also ensures very high standards for all facilities which support research and teaching involving laboratory animals.

Office of International Research
The Office of International Research (OIR) works closely with faculties, research facilitators and top-notch researchers at uOttawa to build effective international collaborative projects.

Office of Research Chairs, Centres and Awards
The Office of Research Chairs, Centres and Awards (RCCA) is responsible for initiating, overseeing, and managing the developmental and renewal processes for internal and external Chair programs as well as internal and major provincial, national and international external research awards and recognition. It also manages the establishment, function and evaluation of university research centres and institutes.

Office of Research Communications
The Office of Research Communications (ORC) is responsible for promoting the excellence and breadth of research taking place at the University of Ottawa and its affiliated research institutes. The team also maintains the research website and produces Research Perspectives, the University’s research magazine.

Office of Research Ethics and Integrity
The Office of Research Ethics and Integrity manages the approval – through one of the Reseearch Ethics Boards – any research project involving human subjects, whether funded or not, prior to the start of the project.

Office of Strategic Development Initiatives
The Office of Strategic Development Initiatives (SDI) is responsible for initiating, developing, overseeing, and managing large scale government funded research projects.

Research Management Services
Research Management Services is responsible for ensuring the sound management of grants and also ensuring that research is conducted responsibly.

Technology Transfer and Business Enterprise
The Technology Transfer and Business Enterprise (TTBE) office facilitates the establishment of strategic partnerships that provide new opportunities for collaborative research, technology development and commercialization.
