UESTC Summer Language Program
Each summer, the University of Ottawa holds the 4 week UESTC Summer Language Program. This program facilitates the language development and multicultural understanding of undergraduate students from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). Taught by OLBI’s most experienced and accomplished language professors, this 21 hrs./week integrated skills course is designed according to the students’ specific language learning needs and interests. By participating in a variety of learning tasks in the classroom and a variety of socio-cultural outings, participants not only receive accelerated linguistic and multicultural training but also develop friendships and memories that last a lifetime.
Content
The focus of the course is to help students build on the English skills they have already acquired and to move beyond these through a variety of tasks that involve authentic oral and written communication. To expose students to the English Language in a quantity of contexts, this course is divided into educational units organized according to theme. All four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) are integrated into each theme.
Class activities are varied. Participants take part in pair work, small group discussions, oral presentations, corrections, peer editing, communicative activities, and outings.
Feedback is provided throughout the course about the achievement of educational unit objectives. Professors help students understand their weaknesses and strengths to promote further progress. In addition, students are formally evaluated in each of the four skills.
