Standards for Web Applications on Mobile: current state and roadmap

Thumbnail of application platform diagram that appears in the reportW3C has published the August 2015 edition of Standards for Web Applications on Mobile, an overview of the various technologies developed in W3C that increase the capabilities of Web applications, and how they apply more specifically to the mobile context.

A deliverable of the HTML5Apps project, this edition includes changes and additions since May 2015, particularly emerging work such as the proposed charter for a Web Payments Working Group and the development of a draft charter for a Hardware Security Working Group. Call for Review: Web Notifications Proposed Recommendation Published

The Web Notification Working Group has published a Proposed Recommendation of Web Notifications. Web Notifications defines an API for end-user notifications. A notification allows alerting the user outside the context of a web page of an occurrence, such as the delivery of email. Comments are welcome through 08 October.

CSS Cascading and Inheritance Level 4 Draft Published

The Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) Working Group has published a Working Draft of CSS Cascading and Inheritance Level 4. This CSS module describes how to collate style rules and assign values to all properties on all elements. By way of cascading and inheritance, values are propagated for all properties on all elements. One of the fundamental design principles of CSS is cascading, which allows several style sheets to influence the presentation of a document. When different declarations try to set a value for the same element/property combination, the conflicts must somehow be resolved.

MediaStream Recording Draft Published

The Device APIs Working Group and the Web Real-Time Communications Working Group have published a Working Draft of MediaStream Recording. This document defines a recording API for use with MediaStreams as defined in GETUSERMEDIA. This API attempts to make basic recording very simple, while still allowing for more complex use cases.

First Public Working Draft: EMMA: Extensible MultiModal Annotation markup language Version 2.0

The Multimodal Interaction Working Group has published a Working Draft of EMMA: Extensible MultiModal Annotation markup language Version 2.0. This specification describes markup for representing interpretations of user input (speech, keystrokes, pen input, etc.) and productions of system output together with annotations for confidence scores, timestamps, medium, etc. It forms part of the proposals for the W3C Multimodal Interaction Framework.

Two Drafts Published by the Device APIs Working Group

The Device APIs Working Group has published two Working Drafts today:

Ambient Light Events: The DeviceLightEvent interface provides information about the ambient light levels, as detected by the device’s light detector, in terms of lux units. This specification defines a means to receive events that correspond to a light sensor detecting the presence of a light.

Proximity Events: The DeviceProximityEvent interface provides web developers information about the distance between the hosting device and a nearby object. This specification defines a means to receive events that correspond to a proximity sensor detecting the presence of a physical object.

W3Cx re-opens course to Learn HTML5 from W3C

The course lasts 6 weeks, and is taught by Michel Buffa, Professor at the University of Côte d’Azur.
