The Web Notification Working Group (charter) works on OS-independent APIs for exposing platform-level notification mechanisms to Web applications.
Most operating systems provide platform notification mechanisms that are intended for use by native applications that run directly on those systems. This Working Group develops APIs that expose those mechanisms to Web Applications—so that Web developers creating, for example, Web-based e-mail clients and instant-messaging clients can more closely integrate their Web application behavior with the notification features of the operating systems of their end users.
The work of this group applies across all device classes: From desktop and mobile browsers to non-browser applications built from Web technologies.
As its starting point for discussion, the group is using the following document edited by John Gregg:
The group primarily conducts its work on the public mailing list public-web-notification@w3.org. That list is publicly archived. and anyone from the public may also subscribe to it and post messages to it.
