W3C Launches Data on the Web Best Practices Working Group

Caroline Burle and Yasodara Cordova, Staff from the W3C Brazil Office, hosted by CGI.Br/NIC.Br, to serve as Co-Chairs of this Working Group.

The mission of the Data on the Web Best Practices Working Group, part of the W3C Data Activity, is to:

  • Develop the open data ecosystem, facilitating better communication between developers and publishers;
  • Provide guidance to publishers of data that will improve consistency in the way data is managed, thus promoting the re-use of data;
  • Foster trust in the data among developers, whatever technology they choose to use, increasing the potential for genuine innovation.

The main Working Group deliverables are:

  • Data on the Web Best Practices
  • Quality and Granularity Description Vocabulary
  • Data Usage Description Vocabulary

We would like to invite all the W3C Offices to participate in this Working Group! The first meeting of the Working Group will be held on January 24, 2014, at 9am ET.

 

W3C Brazil’s Staff is still growing

W3C Brazil has a new office member! We are excited to present her.

VanessaVanessa Tonini is Web developer, focused on front-end development and Web standards since 2007. She is graduated as Technologist in Internet Systems, and she is finishing a post graduation course about Web Development Focused in User Experience at the Federal University of Technology of Paraná (UTFPR). At W3C Brazil, she is working mostly in Web accessibility and open web projects; and she is also helping to improve the communication with the developers’ community.

W3C Germany and Austria Office: HTML5 day in Vienna

For the fourth time W3C Germany and Austria Office (W3C.DE/AT) invites Web developers, programmers, students, teachers and everybody interested in the evolution of the Web to its HTML5 day. After a series of 3 successful events in Berlin, Bonn and Munich the next one will be held in Vienna on Nov 7./8. in cooperation with the Austrian Computer Society (OCG).

As the previous events the event it will provide background and basics on HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript, introduce to new features and APIs and cover some hot topics (e. g. Web Components). A special topic on this event will be “HTML5 and accessibility”. The event will be held in German language. Speaker are Klaus Birkenbihl (on HTML5&Co) and Michael Stenitzer(on HTML5 and accessibility). Details can be found in the announcement.

W3C Brazil’s Staff is growing

W3C Brazil has two new office members! We are excited to present the new women on staff.

Yasodara Córdova, known as Yaso, is a strategic designer, who joined W3C Brazil Office in May. She is in envolved mostly with LabWeb, Decoders and some of the Open Web Platform Projects. She writes for the W3C Brazil’s blog and can be found on twitter as @yaso. She graduated in Design from University of Brasilia and Post Graduated in Marketing Management. Before working at W3C Brazil, she worked as a technical consultant for the Government of Brazil in projects about digital innovation, like public consulting in the Ministry of Justice, digital libraries in the Ministry of Culture and social media for e-gov in the General Secretary of the Presidency of Republic. She is also engaged with Free Software development and Agile development in design.

Selma Morais has joined W3C Brazil Office in September of 2012 as a Project Assistant. She is contributing mostly with WWWW2013, W3C Brazil Web Conference and all the events W3C Brazil Office supports. She graduated in Advertising and Marketing at University Paulista – Unip. She worked in the Congress for Public Informatics in Brazil (CONIP), by planning and coordinating the conferences, the fairs and also the marketing and communication plans.

 

Offices Live Face-to-Face Meeting

The W3C Offices got together for the annual Face-to-Face meeting after the recent Advisory Committee Meeting in Sophia Antipolis, France.  Represented at that event were Australia, Benelux, Brazil, China, Finland, France, Germany/Austria, Hungary, Italy, Korea, Russia, Spain, Sweden and UK & Ireland.  We had a very productive day talking about a number of issues that will enable us to create stronger Offices better able to serve their local W3C Community.

New Benelux Office Manager

Welcome to Annette KIK, the new Benelux office manager and thanks to Fons Kuijk for his support to the W3C activities in the last years. Annette Kik, communications adviser at CWI in Amsterdam, joined the W3C Benelux Office in January 2012 as the new manager. She graduated in nuclear physics and has been working in science communications since 1994. From 2000-2007 she worked for the Benelux Office before. At CWI, Annette is also involved in other international organizations, such as ERCIM, as a member of the editorial board.

Changes in W3C Brazil’s Staff

Picture of Carlos CecconiCarlos Cecconi, project analyst of W3C Brazil, will leave the office to work as Technical Advisor at the Executive Secretariat of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br), which hosts W3C Brazil Office. All the W3C Brazil Office team thanks Carlinhos Cecconi for his great contribution to the spread of open web platform and his commitment to the growing of the Office. On the other hand, CGI-W3C joint projects will keep Carlinhos connected to the Office.

Two new professionals joins the W3C brazil Office team:

Picture of Reinldo FerrazReinaldo Ferraz, Web development specialist, joined W3C Brazil Office last June. He is graduated in Digital Design and post graduated in Hypermedia Design. With more than 12 years of experience in web development, design and standards, he is in charge of web accessibility and open web plataform projects.

 

Caroline Burle dos Santos Guimarães, specialist in negotiations, joined W3C Brazil Office last month. She is graduated in International Relations, and is taking her graduate studies in Latin America, at the University of São Paulo. She is responsible for the international projects, such as open data, and government relations.

 

NEWS- W3C Opens Office in Russia

http://www.w3.org/ —16 February 2012— As part of increasing inclusion and participation in W3C, W3C announced today the launch of a new Russia Office. The Office is hosted by the National Research University “Higher School of Economics” (HSE), founded in 1992. As one of Moscow’s leading Universities, HSE will work with W3C to strengthen ties to both industry and research in Russia as well as HSE’s many international academic and industry partners.

“I am happy to welcome W3C in Russia,” said Victor Klintsov, Deputy Director of Institute of Information Technology at HSE and the head of the new Office. “It is very positive to see growing demand for Russian talent not only to be included in one of the most dynamic industries, but also to shape it. Second, it is quite important for Russian specialists to contribute to the most prominent area of Internet development: the Web.”

To mark the launch, on 16 February 2012 HSE will organize an opening ceremony at Ria Novisti with speakers from Russian ministries, industries, HSE and W3C, including:

Daniel Hladky, W3C Russia Office Deputy Director on “Industry value chain: Impact on Web Technologies”
