- WELCOME to the External Review Panel of the American Library Association! The 6-member panel will be joining us at ÉSIS from September 29th to October 1st, 2013. The panel is chaired by Dr. Alvan Bregman, Head of Technical Services at the University of British Columbia Library.
- Congratulations to ÉSIS professor Dr. Tom Delsey, winner of a 2013 Faculty of Arts Distinguished University Teaching Award!
ÉSIS professor Dr. Mary Cavanagh participated in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program. Professor Cavanagh, working with undergraduate student Emily Stewart (English Department) and ÉSIS graduate student Amanda Ehrlich, presented a poster entitled “Social-biblio.ca: What’s in a @publiclibrary #canlit tweet?”. This poster won 2nd prize in the UROP competition!
Dr. Lynne Bowker, professor and director of ÉSIS, was awarded a 2013 ALISE/OCLC Research Award ($15,000) at a ceremony in Seattle on January 24, 2013. The research project will investigate the usefulness of machine translation for helping newcomers to Canada to make better use of the public library.
- ÉSIS alumnus Channarong Intahchomphoo (MIS 2012) has published a paper entitled “Law Library Virtual Tours and Tutorials on YouTube: A Social Media Review” in the journal Canadian Law Library Review 38(1): 22-24.
- ÉSIS professor Dr. André Vellino was an invited speaker at the 2013 “Information Without Borders” conference held at Dalhousie University in Halifax on February 7, 2013.
- ÉSIS professors Tony Horava and Bill Curran have published a paper entitled “The Importance of Case Studies for LIS Education” in the open access journal Library Philosophy and Practice.
- Congratulations to ÉSIS professor Mary Cavanagh who has received a grant from GRAND NCE for research on commenting policies in websites and library social catalogues.
