Why study in history and theory of art

Studies in history and theory of art will allow you to:

  • Explore historical and contemporary art-making and discourse
  • Develop your ability to think critically and acquire an appropriate vocabulary
  • Be active in the wider visual arts community
  • Become an art historian, art theoretician, art critic, broadcaster or visual arts professor (at the elementary, middle school, high school or university level)
  • Become a curator in a gallery, museum or on a freelance basis
  • Become an administrator in visual arts (work as a gallery owner, museum or art gallery employee, develop municipal, provincial, national or international art policy)

  • Strong intellectual curiosity with regard to historical and contemporary artistic production and discourse
  • Aptitude for research in art history, contemporary art and art theory
