Au début de sa carrière, Peter Beyer a concentré ses recherches surtout sur la théorie sociologique de la religion et sur des thèmes de l’histoire religieuse du Canada. Il a fait ses recherches doctorales sur la pensée religieuse de Louis Riel et des études postdoctorales sur le catholicisme romain au Canada français du dix-neuvième et du vingtième siècles. Cependant, depuis les années 80, ses recherches ont surtout porté sur la compréhension sociologique des relations entre la religion et la mondialisation et la religion dans le Canada contemporain.
Ses recherches actuelles visent la diversité religieuse et le multiculturalisme au Canada, surtout en ce qui concerne les immigrants récents et la deuxième génération des ces immigrants. Il a été directeur du département de 1996 à 2004.
