The UNU Institute for Sustainability and Peace (UNU-ISP) generates scientific knowledge and builds capacities to address some of the most pressing issues on the UN agenda: global change, peace and human rights, and development. Recognizing the complex and interconnected nature of these challenges, UNU-ISP applies an integrated approach that bridges the traditional divides between the natural and social sciences and the humanities. The institute engages in interdisciplinary and problem-focused research, education and capacity development, with a strong emphasis on partnerships and collaboration between developing and developed countries.
Based in Tokyo, UNU-ISP also has an operating unit in Bonn: SCYCLE (Sustainable Cycles), which focuses on sustainable production, consumption and disposal. A twin relationship between UNU-ISP and UNU-INRA in Ghana has been established; joint research is already underway. The Global Environment Outreach Centre (GEOC), a joint initiative of UNU-ISP and the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, promotes engagement in environmental issues among civil society and the general public.
UNU-ISP offers a Master of Science in Sustainability, Development, and Peace programme.
