FTP to Doc-Depot

Accessing Doc-Depot through the FTP protocol allows you to download (and, if authorized, upload) groups of files and whole directories with one instruction. One FTP solution is the following:

a) Do not use Internet Explorer! Use Windows Explorer like this: Go to "My Network Places" (you can do that from the desktop or the "Start" button)

b) Click "Add Network Place", click "Next" to continue, and "Next" a second time

c) Copy and paste the following address:

            ftp://Your-Telfer-Account@doc-depot.management.uottawa.ca

d) But replace Your-Telfer-Account with your own actual account at the Telfer School of Management

e) Click "Next" then type a name by which you will remember the network place. Example: Doc-Depot_by_FTP

f) Click "Finish". The first time you do that whole process, the system will ask you to type your password.

g) That process will allow you to access Doc-Depot from afar (home/office). For those who have permission to write inside Doc-Depot (all staff have that permission), this procedure will effectively allow you to upload files.

Note: The new version of Internet Explorer (v.7) cannot be used efficiently anymore with the FTP protocol. That's why one needs to go to "My Network Places".

In the future, whenever you go to "My Network Places", you will see the entry "Doc-Depot_by_FTP" (or whatever name you chose) and the content of doc-depot will be shown to you. If you're authorized to write unto doc-depot, you can drag and drop from your hard disk.

Students Web Sites

To see a Web site created by a student, click (or type in your browser):

         http://home.management.uottawa.ca/~Telfer-Student-Account

And replace "Telfer-Student-Account" with the student account where the Web site has been created.

Make sure that the ~ (tilde) precedes the account ID

A student can create such a Web site by dropping files in the "Public-docs" folder of his own U: Drive, that is in U:\Public-Docs

If the directory "Public-Docs" does not exist, create it yourself. That can easily be done here in the labs (it's tougher to do from home).

Staff Web Sites

To see a Web site created by a professor, click (or type in your browser):

         http://public.management.uottawa.ca/~Professor-Account

And replace "Professor-Account" with the Professor's account at the Telfer School of Management. It's usually his/her last name.

Make sure that the ~ (tilde) precedes the Professor's account

A professor can create such a Web site by dropping files in the "Public-docs" folder of his own U: Drive, that is in U:\Public-Docs

If the directory "Public-Docs" does not exist, create it yourself. That can easily be done here in the labs (it's tougher to do from home).

VCommon Drive (Staff Only)

Accessing the V: Drive through the FTP protocol allows you to easily download and upload files and directories to the V Common Area (if you have the permissions to do that). One way of doing it is the following:

a) Go to "My Network Places" (you can do that from the desktop or the "Start" button)

b) Click "Add Network Place", click "Next" to continue, and "Next" a second time

c) Copy and paste the following address:

            ftp://Your-Telfer-Account@vcommon.management.uottawa.ca

d) Replace Your-Telfer-Account with your own actual account at the Telfer School of Management

e) Click "Next" then type a name by which you will remember the network place. Example: V-Common_by_FTP

f) Click "Finish". The first time you do that whole process, the system will ask you to type your password.

g) That process will allow you to access the V:\common area from afar (home/office). This procedure will effectively allow you to upload files and whole directories in "one shot". You can drag and drop from your hard disk.

Note: The new version of Internet Explorer (v.7) cannot be used efficiently anymore with the FTP protocol. And that's why one needs to go to "My Network Places".

In the future, whenever you go to "My Network Places", you will see the entry "V-Common_by_FTP" (or whatever name you chose) and the content of the V Drive will be shown to you, allowing you to drag and drop.

FileZilla anyone?

FileZilla is a program that "specializes" in the FTP protocole. That's all it does. Some professionals like it more than "Network Places".

Here's how to download FileZilla, a program made just for the use of the FTP protocol
