Day three (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday…)
Woke up by feeling the frozen gust of wind today.. again. I think it’s time I wear another layer of clothing on top of my already four layers of clothing. I was able to go to CG Lounge to rest a little more on the sofas there. It seems to me like 8 hours of sleep outside is equivalent to 4 hours of slepinside. Mentally very hard.
I was able to collect donations outside of the UBC Bookstore and David Lam today. Much easier getting donations from outside of the UBC Bookstore than David Lam. CBC Radio Canada (the French television news broadcasters) came to do a piece on us today. It was nice. They made a monetary donation in addition to a bag of nuts, an apple, and two mini-oranges. Very nice of them. Since it’s a French broadcast, I’m wondering if they’re going to have my voice translated into this Chinese accented French speaking man. Hahaha. That would be fun to watch.
Anywho, must get back to working on English research proposal due tomorrow. Then work on math and economics midterms on Friday. I think I need a shower.
Today was good (except the rain part)… I did three presentations and lots of asking for donations outside to collect over $40 in donations. An interesting finding: Commerce students are frugal; whereas Arts students are giving. Take it as you like, as I too am a Commerce student.
I saw more media coverage at our home. I think it was Channel M.
Psychology midterm went well too.
Been working on English recently since I need to write a research proposal due Wednesday. I think it’ll take up most of tomorrow as I’m disappointly slow with any English related topics.
As I mentioned in Day One’s post, trying to study when you’re homeless is near impossible. Like the people in some third world countries, education’s not their priority since they don’t even have food or shelter secured. They’ll tend to those before they would even care to consider about education. Fortunately or unfortunately, that’s what 5 Days for the Homeless is missing. Although hard to recreate, I don’t think any of the participants in any of the universities are experiencing the fears of not knowing if there is a tomorrow. Living by the day. Not knowing what the future brings. That’s what I think homeless people are facing (non-exclusive).
You truly start appreciating the friends and family you have once you get a taste of what’s it’s like being homeless; those who provide support when you need it most. It’s what we take granted for until we don’t have that support to get us back on our feet.
The first day has gone by pretty smooth. The 5 Days for the Homeless cause received a lot of media attention today. It’s nice. The forecast is rain, but this is nothing compared to our friends in the East (facing snow storms, I think).
My three midterms.. Mmm my three midterms. Tomorrow is the first of three, psychology. It’s quite difficult trying to study when you have no home to go to. No assurance that there is a tomorrow. I can see why it’s amazingly hard, if not impossible, for a homeless person to get a good education. I’ll tell you how the midterm goes tomorrow. I’m 80% ready.
