Description:
Photonics is the science of light; it is the technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fibre optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems.  

Applications:
Powering the world with low cost, environment friendly, high efficiency concentrated solar cells; enabling broadband information access (internet, telephony, cable) for all; communicating sound, vision and touch over optical networks; sensing and measuring the world... The range of applications of photonics extends from the communications and entertainment systems in our homes to uses in biology, quantum computation, energy generation, medicine and environmental sensing.

Leadership:

  • The Microwave Photonics Research Laboratory pioneered the concept of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) over Fiber, by demonstrating innovative techniques to generate and distribute Ultra-Wideband signals over optical fiber (Jianping Yao).
