Taking research to heart

An article co-authored by University of Ottawa professor and vice-president for research Mona Nemer appeared as a front cover story of the prestigious journal Nature.

The result of an international collaborative effort involving researchers from Canada, Japan and the United States, the study detailed in the article helps demystify the genetics underlying heart development; this in turn paves the way for the design of new diagnostic tools that could improve how the management of individuals at risk of congenital heart disease and those already suffering from it. Congenital heart disease represents the largest class of birth defects in humans.
