An even greener composter for uOttawa
Brigitte Morin, who joined the Physical Resources Service in 2008, is responsible for waste disposal, recycling and composting on campus. Her awareness of the challenges facing our planet goes back a long way, and she completed her universities studies right here at uOttawa, in Earth sciences. During her studies, she devoted a lot of time to environmental protection activities as a member of the Student Federation.
The Physical Resources Services has launched many green initiatives at uOttawa, including the purchase of a new-generation composter in the summer of 2009. Contrary to electric composters, uOttawa's is activated by the heat generated as waste decomposes, so it needs no external power source. This latest addition to campus operations is yet another step in achieving Physical Resources' short- and long-term sustainable- development objectives.
Excited at having made the new-generation composter purchase a reality, Brigitte Morin proudly adds that uOttawa is the very first Ontario university to buy one.
The positive effects of this green initiative are already evident: Starting right away in 2010, Food Services will serve its take-out food in compostable containers that the new machine can process as well.
