The power of Earth science
The University of Ottawa welcomes for the first time an important international conference on Earth science. The Joint Annual Meeting of the Geological Association of Canada, the Mineralogical Association of Canada, the Society of Economic Geologists and the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits takes place at the University of Ottawa from May 25 to 27, 2011, with the motto Navigating Past and Future Changeas its backdrop.At the event, leading experts from a range of geoscience disciplines will focus on a number of issues, notably the important role of Earth science in two key societal issues facing Canada: natural resources and the Canadian economy, and natural risks and the security of Canadians. Close to 1,000 geoscientists from Canada, the United States and other countries will discuss topics that have made headlines of late, from floods and earthquakes to climate change.
True to its longstanding tradition, the Annual Meeting also shines the lights on up-and-coming researchers in the field, as more than 250 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students in the sciences will be taking part in the 2011 edition of the event.
