Happy Holidays to everyone
The holiday season is a time to look back on the year that is winding down. The past twelve months have seen University accomplishments in many different areas.
Our medical education program received its best accreditation results ever. The accreditors cited the bilingual character of the program and high student satisfaction levels as key assets. As well, the Faculty of Medicine opened its Skills and Simulation Centre, which will improve patient safety and provide better training for health professionals by adopting best practices and carrying out innovative research projects.
In September, the University was one of the first in the country to ban the sale of bottled water on its campus. This joint initiative with the Student Federation shows the University's undeniable leadership on environmental issues.
Rees Kassen of the Department of Biology is the recipient of a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada E. W. R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship. As well, the University scored a coup by hiring Professor Robert W. Boyd, renowned in the field of photonics and quantum optics. Meanwhile, Professor Elizabeth Kristjansson and her research team from the School of Psychology and the Institute of Population Health won a United Way Community Builder of the Year Award in the Speak Up category.
The Faculty of Law launched its Centre for Law, Technology and Society Centre for Law, Technology and Society, which will look at the complex and multifaceted relationship that exists among these three areas. Finally, The Globe and Mail named My Life, by Sofia Tolstaya, published by University of Ottawa Press, as one of the 2010 Globe 100 best non-fiction books of the year.
For all of these accomplishments, there are dozens of lesser-known success stories on campus. As 2010 comes to a close, and with so many achievements still to be recognized, the University continues to stand tall in the areas of teaching and research.
