Centralized Backup and Restore Facility Service Level Agreement
Introduction
Computing and Communications Services offers a centralized backup and restore facility to the University community. This facility is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The software that provides this facility is called Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM). TSM is the latest version of software originally released under the names ADSTAR and ADSM.
The facility can handle data from network attached computers of various manufacturers, including IBM-compatible and Macintosh microcomputers, Novell file servers, and UNIX hosts. To use the facility, you must obtain a TSM account by calling 6555 and install the TSM client code on your computer. The TSM client will perform a backup of the data on your computer once per day.
The TSM server and client routines store and manage the backup data automatically for you. Once a backup has been done of a file, the backup will be kept for at least as long as the original is still on your computer. When you update a file, a fresh backup will be taken the next time the TSM client is run. The first time you run the TSM backup, the process will take some time as it must make copies of everything on your computer. Subsequent backup runs will take only a few minutes since only the new and changed files will be copied.
If you have any questions with regards to installing or using the TSM software, please contact the help line at x6555. If you have received an automated e-mail from the TSM administrator, you can contact the help line, or you can send an e-mail reply to the TSM administrator.
