Why study in philosophy

In addition to having an undeniable intrinsic value, philosophy allows you to acquire intellectual skills that go well beyond the specialized competencies required for any particular profession. Since it deals mainly with issues that have no simple solutions, philosophy emphasizes exchange of ideas and debate, and thus cultivates an appetite for deep and serious reflection. More particularly, the study of philosophy develops capacities for:

  • logical thought
  • understanding complex issues
  • autonomous reflection
  • constructive criticism
  • analyzing and solving difficult problems
  • synthesis
  • clear verbal and written expression

Such skills are applicable to any subject matter and in any life context. It is therefore unsurprising that philosophy graduates do exceptionally well on professional and graduate school admissions tests such as the LSAT (Law School Admission Test), the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test), and the GRE (Graduate Record Exam).

Moreover, since philosophy enhances your ability to think critically and makes you less vulnerable to manipulation and demagoguery, a philosophical education is an exceptional preparation for intelligent and responsible participation in public life.
