The University of Ottawa and Canada’s capital offer an unbeatable career-lifestyle package.
Ottawa is a vibrant, modern hub that offers theatre… concerts… national museums… exquisite international cuisine… and world-renowned festivals in both English and French. Friendly people, immaculate surroundings, relatively low cost of living—here, big-city and small-town experiences blend, giving Canada’s capital unique charm.
It’s not surprising that in 2007 MoneySense magazine ranked Ottawa as Canada’s best overall place to live.
In the heart of the city
Just a stroll from the University of Ottawa downtown campus, you’ll find the historic Byward Market, home to an eclectic potpourri of restaurants, cafés and bistros, specialty boutiques, artisan shops, outdoor vendors, street performers, artists, and live-music venues.
An abundance of festivals
Ottawa and its sister city, Gatineau, Quebec, host an array of festivals and events throughout the year: Winterlude… the Canadian Tulip Festival… Ottawa Blues Fest… the Festival franco-ontarien… the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival… the Ottawa International Jazz Festival… and many more.
A nature-lover’s delight
If you’re an outdoors person, you’ll love Ottawa. Whether you’re into hiking, biking, cross-country or downhill skiing, swimming, or golfing, you’ll find plenty of opportunity in and around the nation’s capital to indulge your passions.
A privileged relationship with government
Located less than a 15-minute walk from Parliament Hill in Canada’s capital, the University of Ottawa enjoys unparalleled access to federal government departments and prominent national institutions.
In fact, our success in teaching and research is linked to our faculty’s role in federal government policy making, as well as its access to authoritative information sources. These sources include the Parliament of Canada, the Library of Parliament, Library and Archives Canada, and the Supreme Court of Canada.
The University of Ottawa also participates in dozens of partnerships, memberships, and affiliations with leading capital-based national, non-governmental organizations in the health, legal, data, research, and public policy sectors.
Language leadership
The University of Ottawa has always embraced language leadership. The founding prospectus for the College of Bytown, as the University was first known, committed the University to “the study of the English and French languages, which are indispensably necessary.”
Today, as Canada’s premier bilingual university, the University of Ottawa pledges to offer the widest range of bilingual teaching and research programs. The University also founded the Institute of Official Languages and Bilingualism. This institute serves as a centre of excellence in second-language teaching and in researching and developing public policies on bilingualism.
Where Canada meets the world
The University of Ottawa plays a unique and powerful role among Canadian universities in presenting Canada to the world. As a sign of our international commitment, we recently established the Peace and Conflict Studies and Public and International Affairs programs
We also enjoy some 140 bilateral agreements with sister universities in over 50 countries. Benefiting both faculty and students, these agreements deal with collaborative research and student exchanges.
We welcome professors and students from around the globe to both enjoy and enrich University of Ottawa’s multicultural milieu.
Making our world a better place
University of Ottawa faculty, staff, and students get involved in improving quality of life in Canada—and elsewhere. Recent examples include:
- The University’s 2006 United Way Campaign, which raised $406 million
- The Faculty of Law’s house-building project for Hurricane Katrina victims
- The School of Management’s assisting the West-African country Niger by acquiring $250,000 of medical equipment and raising $40,000
