About the Archives
Founded as the College of Bytown in 1848, the University of Ottawa today is North America's oldest and largest bilingual university. Thanks to the Archives of the University, you can relive our institution's 150-years history.
More specifically, the Archives collect, select, organize, preserve and publicize documents created or accumulated by the University's staff, as well as other documents that have an historical value for the University.
Also, to promote sound management on campus and to advance the principles of archivistics and records management, the staff at the Archives conduct workshops and provide expert consultation on records classification systems, on retention schedules, and on filing and storage equipment.
The documents kept at the Archives can help you solve administrative problems or can provide background information for research projects and publications. Among the most sought-after subjects are faculty, department and service histories, bilingualism, women's issues, sports, campus architecture and people with special ties to the University. In other words, the Archives' historical treasures are both varied and extensive, bearing witness to the University's rich heritage: documents of all kinds, photos, posters, artefacts, films, textile and clothing samples, etc.
