SAS stops charging students, professors for software

July 16, 2010 - SAS Institute Inc. (SAS) announced in April that it will provide students and professors with free access to its business analytics software starting in the fall semester 2010.

Professors have always had access to a free version of the software, available via SAS’s website, but students were required to pay to use the service.

Listed are the main differences between the free version offered by SAS and the licensed version offered by Computing and Communications Services ($50/year):

  • The free version is only available for teaching purposes. This does not cover any research use.

  • Use of the free version requires that all data be uploaded to the SAS server in North Carolina. The licensed copy allows users to keep the data on their workstation.

  • The free version is only available for the Windows platform. The licensed version grants access to Linux, Solaris and Unix platforms.

If you have any questions regarding this software, please complete the Computing Assistance Request Form.
