Champs d’intérêt

Ma recherche porte sur les thèmes de l’environnement et de la santé, des géographies de la santé, de la santé psychosociale et de la perception des risques environnementaux. Ma recherche est multidisciplinaire et dépend d’un éventail de méthodes de recherche et de sources de données.

Je mène présentement une étude sur trois ans financée par le CRSH, portant sur le thème de la santé psychosociale et de la perception des risques environnementaux. Plus spécifiquement, nous examinons comment les nouvelles mères perçoivent et négocient les risques environnementaux à la santé sur une base socioéconomique, géographique et environnementale. J’ai par le passé participé à des travaux de recherche connexes, notamment une étude examinant l’impact du SRAS sur les travailleurs en milieu hospitalier à Toronto, ainsi qu’une étude portant sur les impacts psychosociaux du désastre de la Mer Aral au Karakalpakstan alors que je travaillais pour Médecins sans Frontières. Plus récemment, je suis retourné dans la région de la Mer Aral où j’ai mené une enquête pour UNICEF portant sur la capacité du système de santé de la région de répondre aux problèmes de santé environnementaux des enfants.

Par le passé, j’ai beaucoup travaillé à partir d’approches spatiales et temporales afin d’étudier les tendances des maladies respiratoires et autres conditions ainsi que leurs déterminants potentiels. J’ai plusieurs publications à mon effectif, portant sur la pneumonie et l’influenza, ainsi que les taux d’asthme et leur liens aux facteurs environnementaux, socioéconomiques et du système de santé.

Je m’intéresse fortement aussi à la santé autochtone et Métis. Ces dernières années, j’ai été impliqué dans des études avec la Nation Métis de l’Ontario concernant les maladies respiratoires chroniques, avec l’Assemblée des Premières Nations afin d’analyser les données de l'Enquête régionale longitudinale sur la santé des Premières Nations (ERS), avec Affaires Indiennes et du Nord Canada afin d’examiner les liens entre la présence de l’asthme et les facteurs socioéconomiques et géographiques.

Je suis le directeur du laboratoire d’analyse en environnement et santé (LAES), construit et financé par le FCI. Ce laboratoire loge des ordinateurs dernier cri, de l’équipement audiovisuel, un serveur fiable pour le stockage de données ainsi que les dernières versions de logiciels d’analyse qualitative et quantitative de données y compris le SIG. Une bonne partie de ma recherche, ainsi que celle de mes étudiants au troisième cycle, y est réalisée.
