All I have to say is thank you

Filed under: Prince George, Rachel Lindsay — rachel @ 1:19 pm MDT

I would like to thank:

-My fellow homeless buddies, you guys are amazing and I would have not made it through the week without each of us to cheer each other up. ( AND THIS IS INCLUDING ALL OF YOU ACROSS CANADA, YOU ARE ALL AMAZING PEOPLE!)

-The amazing people at the university, and I mean everyone even if you haven’t fed us or donated money, the fact that you supported us doing this event is a donation in itself.

-The community for supporting us and some of the special people who have taken their time to come up and see us or feed us, OR donate to us!

-Our charity, CPAH, you guys are great helping us get this event going and supporting us!

Lastly, I want to say, let’s not forget about what we are doing this for, for us we were homeless for 5 days but it shoudn’t end here, and we need to just remember that everyone needs a helping hand sometimes and all we have to do is listen and offer our hand or a smile.

This event has changed my perspective on a lot of things, and I hope all of you reading this will consider that all anyone really needs is someone to listen and to care.

can’t even imagine

Filed under: Prince George, Rachel Lindsay — rachel @ 10:55 am MDT

So after waking up today on day 3, I have come to the conclusion that we have no idea what type of hardships a homeless person would have to live with everyday. We have had so much support from the students, community and everyone doing this campaign, however we are only doing this for 5 days.  Would we recieve this support and help after a month? after a year?

Waking up this morning was cold, however we had a couple suprises left for us from some gracious people ( who we do not even know.) They left water, cheese and crackers, soup and $5.00! I also saw a squirrel eying up our food, I was very prepared to chase him if he was going to try to go for it, but he didn’t.

Today is a career fair at our school so we are hoping to gain some more exposure from that. We are up on the UNBC website as well! www.unbc.ca

As for how I’m feeling, I am smelly, tired and just not happy in general. Then again though I know I really have NO reason to complain considering I’ll be in my own bed on Friday night, and I know I have amazing friends and family there for me at all times!

Keep on trucking everyone!

Wind; Cold; Noise; and community

Filed under: Caitlin Foote, Derek O'Neill, Liam Iliffe, Prince George, Rachel Lindsay, Robin Foster — liam.iliffe @ 9:28 am MDT

We made it through night two. There was little sleep involved however; as there was intense wind on campus throughout the night and into the morning. The wind was bone chilling; and if you turned away from the wind we had what has seemingly become the brightest light in the world. This light will keep anyone awake. The wind creates a lot of noise; my garbage bag which I am using to carry my sleeping bag and pillow was continuously making noise all night. People walking by; and general crashing and banging on campus create a horrid sleeping environment. I would not like to know what sort of noises exist in the downtown core.

The only thing that separates us from the cold bricks is a thin layer of salvaged cardboard from the campus corner store; it’s not much but it will have to do, we have no other choice.

Point of interest: The level of community that has been created amongst us five is remarkable. We take little for granted and really really appreciate nearly everything. Last night when we arrived at our spot to bunk down we found a bag of tea and one slice of pizza waiting there for us. We were all so excited about this single piece of pizza; it looked like the greatest pizza in the world. There was no bickering over who’s pizza it was going to be, it was simply understood that we were all in this together and that we would share the pizza.

Night Two is in the bank… Lets see how day two goes…. I need a nap already.

sleepy and a noisy stomach

Filed under: Prince George, Rachel Lindsay — rachel @ 10:18 pm MDT

So today went really well for our first day, so many people gave us food, way more than I expected to receive. The best thing was steak that someone brought in a hour ago, soooo good. I am really tired and haven’t been able to focus all day, and when I am using my brain, my stomach seems to growl like no tomorrow!  All in all our campaign is going really good, and it has opened my eyes up to how many great people there are up at UNBC. Hopefully we will be re-energized tomorrow and ready to collect some more cash for the cause!

thank god for timmy’s

So, we made it through the night, it was actually not very cold considering we are in Northern BC and we still have a bunch of snow outside. Our sleeping bags are amazingly warm so I’m not complaining about our night really. It went well considering our situation.  Right now I’m in my first class, and a friend of mine Scott bought me A LOT of tim hortons, thankfully then I can share it with the rest of the group in case they haven’t got breakfast yet. I have a feeling however that I will be eating a bunch of timmys over this week.  Anyways the rest of the day should go okay, just alot of classes and stuff to go to. Seem’s like everyone at our school knows what we are doing as well which I love, people are actually asking how we are doing and stuff!

Day one

Filed under: Prince George, Rachel Lindsay — rachel @ 7:10 pm MDT

I am really getting excited about how all the students at UNBC are going to react when they see the main hallway of our campus. Our homeless crew decided to write on a lot of chalkboards, just writing the website 5days.ca, as well as a rule that we have to follow throughout the week on a board. We just hope that facilities won’t move the boards on monday but at least we will get some students noticing our advertising. I do feel like I’m almost cheating at being homeless because a homeless person would not have a brand new sleeping bag or warm layers of clothes on a continuous basis. As more fortunate people we all have people to count on to help us out when we are desperate for food or drinks when we need it most, homeless people don’t have a solid base of family and friends necessarily. This week should be an interesting experience and I wish everyone else doing 5days the best with their week, let’s all make this an amazing event that will change people’s perspective’s on homelessness!!!!!

4 nights to sleep in my comfy warm bed, then it’s hitting the concrete ground with 2 feet of snow on Sunday night.
