it’s a wrap… i could go for a wrap actually…

well, it’s the last day, and soon we’re gonna part ways and go back to whatever we called normal before… i’m definitely gonna miss it… i’m not going to miss sleeping on the cement, but i am going to miss the amazing laughs and stupid antics we had as we were trying to get to sleep… ‘every sperm is good’, as Liam and Derek would sing.  and our theme song, which through some wild coincidence is also the theme song of a movie, you may have heard of it, Indiana Jones…? haha, this was such a great week, i don’t care what anyone says, as hard as the conditions were, we all experienced something really cool, and as serious as the issue behind this week is… it was by far the best week of the year… thank you UNBC and Prince George for being your most generous and kind selves, for not making us starve (for those ultra cool people who brought us hot breakfast in the morning, u rock my world), for opening your hearts and spirits, and helping us help others… i can’t wait to do this again next year!

night of the week…

Filed under: Caitlin Foote, Prince George — caitlin.foote @ 10:05 am MDT

So there we were, chilling in our little niche outside the old library doors… our sides still a little sore from the laughs we’d just calmed down from… all of us laying back, about ready to drift off, when out of the dark (or actually, extreme light, thanks to the door lights above us, which are really condensed suns…) came Robin’s voice, sleepily: hey guys, look, a shooting star! I looked up into the night sky and my eyes widened in shock: hey, that’s not a shooting star, I gasped. Suddenly, we all sit up, staring in awe at the massive fiery object that had appeared out of nowhere right in front of us. Liam, Liam! Take a picture, take a picture, I shrieked. But Liam couldn’t take a picture… All Liam could do was stare, chin dusting the concrete we’d been sleeping on. Where’s my camera, where is it, shouts Derek. He and Liam both jump up, not even bothering to get out of their sleeping bags, they madly hopped out across the balcony, trying to photograph the amazing night sky scene. Robin, Rachel, and I all followed, shouting and crowing wildly, thoroughly impressed. The astroid/meteor was a huge flaming boulder, literally roaring as it flew, a long streaking tail flowing behind it, and a much smaller, barely noticeable meteor trailing it. We watched it fly until it was out of sight, heading a firm north, slightly east direction… Wherever it landed, it made one hell of a dent.  Of course after this, we were all so wired, that as soon as Derek mentioned that he really shouldn’t be allowed to perspire, having just caught a whiff of himself, Rachel, Robin, and I collapsed into total hysterics, for a good solid 10 minutes… it was only when I started clutching my sides and crying Ow, Ow, that we started to calm down again.  All in all, best night of the week. Good morning too, I would like to thank the mystery lady (I was hiding in my sleeping bag, and therefore didn’t see who it was) who braved the chill to come bring us a warm breakfast and coffee this morning, Thank you!  Have a crazy cool day everyone, one more sleep, one more day… Rock on Canada!             –Caitlin

imagine that…

you wanna know the definition of ironic? today is career day at UNBC, and so many business’ have set up shop in the long glass corridors of the school that students are most likely to traverse repeatedly throughout the day. because of this event, we could no longer keep our area that we had set up and had to move across the corridor to the floor.  sure, we definitely look a lot more homeless now, sitting on the concrete with nothing but cardboard between us and it, but guess who replaced us across the way? none other the Prince George’s very own finest, the RCMP! we’re still laughing, and they’ve come over and chatted a few times… but isn’t that always the way? bums across from police stations downtown…

chillin…

Well, it’s just me right now, my teammates are all in class.  I just can’t believe how supportive everyone here at UNBC and in Prince George have been… It is truly incredible the amount of generosity this campaign has spurred.  There are always a few critics out there, and while I can appreciate where they’re coming from, I have to disagree with them.  We know we’re not homeless, we’re not even pretending to be… All we’re trying to do is give people a glimpse into the world of poverty, to show them that anyone can fall.  This isn’t kicking the dog in the face, this is fair warning… But it’s something else too… It’s human will.  We’re here to show everyone, the whole world, that no one is alone, and that even though it seems like it sometimes, maybe a lot of the time, no one is forgotten either.  That’s my promise, that’s why I’m here.  I’m just overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who has come by and donated, or given us food, or even just to stop by and offer a few words of encouragement, and to say good job.  Some people have even said thank you, and it gets me every time. To all the others out there, keep it up, stick together, and keep smiling…I love you guys   –Caitlin

Wind; Cold; Noise; and community

Filed under: Caitlin Foote, Derek O'Neill, Liam Iliffe, Prince George, Rachel Lindsay, Robin Foster — liam.iliffe @ 9:28 am MDT

We made it through night two. There was little sleep involved however; as there was intense wind on campus throughout the night and into the morning. The wind was bone chilling; and if you turned away from the wind we had what has seemingly become the brightest light in the world. This light will keep anyone awake. The wind creates a lot of noise; my garbage bag which I am using to carry my sleeping bag and pillow was continuously making noise all night. People walking by; and general crashing and banging on campus create a horrid sleeping environment. I would not like to know what sort of noises exist in the downtown core.

The only thing that separates us from the cold bricks is a thin layer of salvaged cardboard from the campus corner store; it’s not much but it will have to do, we have no other choice.

Point of interest: The level of community that has been created amongst us five is remarkable. We take little for granted and really really appreciate nearly everything. Last night when we arrived at our spot to bunk down we found a bag of tea and one slice of pizza waiting there for us. We were all so excited about this single piece of pizza; it looked like the greatest pizza in the world. There was no bickering over who’s pizza it was going to be, it was simply understood that we were all in this together and that we would share the pizza.

Night Two is in the bank… Lets see how day two goes…. I need a nap already.

well, that was my second midterm for today, thankfully no more this week… Sitting in the classroom, my skin couldn’t decide if it was warm or cold, my fingers were cramping (though it was hardly a strenuous bout of writing…) and my mind absolutely refused to spit out anything even remotely… Huh, it’s doing it now, what’s the word I’m looking for? Decent, maybe. Oh dear… I don’t feel tired, I just feel a wee bit slow…
