François Julien - Dean, Telfer School of Management
François Julien was appointed Dean of the Telfer School of Management January 1, 2011.
Biography:
François Julien has been a professor at the Telfer School of Management for 20 years and has over 12 years of experience in academic leadership positions. He was associate dean (Programs) and vice dean at the Telfer School of Management from January 2005 until June 2010. His role in these positions was to plan, coordinate and oversee all academic programs offered by the Telfer School. Over his tenure, he was involved in creating the School’s first research-based programs, the MSc in Management and the MSc in Health Systems, and also led the team responsible for revising the curriculum of all programs offered by the Telfer School. He made significant contributions to the quality of the student experience through initiatives such as the Personal and Leadership Development Program.
Beginning in the fall of 2006, Professor Julien was acting program director for the Master’s in Health Administration (MHA) program. He forged strong links with leaders in the health care sector and coordinated the efforts of the MHA professors responsible for revising the program curriculum. He was director of the Telfer MBA program between 1997 and 2005. In July 2010, he was named acting dean of the Telfer School of Management.
Professor Julien teaches production and operations management, management sciences and business communications. His research interests include production planning and scheduling and operations management in general, and he has published articles in Management Science, the Journal of Production and Operations Management and IIE Transactions.
François Julien served as president of the Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS) University of Waterloo student chapter (1989-1990) and the Ottawa chapter of CORS (1996-1998) as well as co-chair (1993-1994) and chair (1995-1997) of the CORS Practice Prize Competition. He received a CORS service award in 1997.
François Julien holds an honours bachelor of commerce from the University of Ottawa (summa cum laude, University gold medal, 1986) as well as a master’s of applied sciences (management science, 1988) and a PhD (management science, gold medal, 1991) from the University of Waterloo.
