In the spotlight
Preternatural
Ottawa, ON—The natural, unnatural and supernatural collide in an exhibition of contemporary art that will be launched at the Canadian Museum of Nature on 9 December. Preternatural will span three venues over three months and include artists from Ottawa, Gatineau, UK/Germany, USA, Norway, India and Korea.
Curator Dr. Celina Jeffery, Associate Professor of Art History and Theory at the University of Ottawa, says that the show “explores the themes of nature, wonder and the extraordinary through a wide variety of mediums, such as photography, video and sculpture.”
The first phase of the exhibition, at the Museum of Nature, travels from Andrew Wright’s nocturnal Arctic scenes to the eerie underwater worlds created in tanks by Mariele Neudecker. The wonder of the botanical world is contemplated in Sarah Walko’s installation formed from numerous tiny organic and inorganic specimens and in Marie-Jeanne Musiol’s electromagnetic photography that captures the energy emanating from plants. Ultimately, the fragility and potential of the natural world can be seen in Anne Katrine Senstad’s use of sustainable farming strategies to create a disorientating sugar cane labyrinth.
