Come join the Pride Centre for a panel discussion on queering graduate and post-doctoral studies at the University of Ottawa! As you know, the University of Ottawa does not currently have a Sexuality Studies or Queer Studies program. Come learn how students at our university are queering their graduate and post-doctoral studies! The Panelists: Caitlin Campisi: Caitlin's research focuses on representations of queer youth on mainstream teen television. Using theories of homonormativity, she analyzes representations of queerness on Pretty Little Liars and Degrassi from an intersectional framework, looking at racialized status, class, gender identity and sexuality. John Eckler: John Ecker is a PhD student in Experimental Psychology. Although his primary research interests involve homelessness and housing issues, he has infused queer perspectives into several of his research projects and will be conducting his comprehensive exam on the greatly under reported issue of adult queer homelessness. Omar Sabry: Omar's research explores the different conditions of LGBT communities in Arab countries. In particularly, it looks at the political challenges to LGBT existence and activism in the following Arab countries: Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Iraq and Kuwait. Among the issues discussed are the role of militias, laws and the police. Taiva Tegler: Tavia is doing her research on queer pedagogy - ways of queering literacy, disrupting binaries in the classroom and engaging challenging educators in PSE to engage with queer studies. Jenna Tenn-Yuk: Jenna Tenn-Yuk's research explores spoken word slam poetry in Ottawa. She is examining the lack of female poets in slam poetry, and also how women use their voices, and gender, race and sexual identities, to create a space of audibility for women in Ottawa’s slam scene to effect change.
