Chair's Message
At the turn of the 19th century the Impressionist painters captured the world’s imagination with paintings that depicted nature and people. Who can forget the works of Degas, Cezanne and Van Gogh to mention a few. The study of mathematics has no less fascinated students throughout the ages. Who can forget the breakthroughs of Gauss, Newton, Einstein and Fisher? Mathematics is as fresh today as in times past and perhaps even more so with the advent of new computing technologies. Researchers in all fields of science and engineering, economics and psychology attest to its pivotal role in furthering new developments. The emerging fields of bio-informatics and bio-statistics are at the ebb of major discoveries as scientists try to further understand the genome.
Our department offers a variety of programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. With a permanent faculty of 35 professors along with some part time instructors we teach more than 150 courses per year covering a wide range of subjects in mathematics and statistics. In addition, our department has a significant outreach programme for budding young high school students interested in mathematics. We invite you to look through our web site and select your programme. We will be happy to help.
