Taveuni Fiji

Taveuni (pronounced Tah-vee-ew-nee), the garden island of Fiji, is rugged, wet, verdant and pristine. It lies only seven kilometers off the southeast coast of Vanua Levu and is 42 kilometers long and averages about 11 kilometers wide. Taveuni is sparsely populated (approximately 15,000 inhabitants). Virtually all residents live in traditional Fijian villages.

There are about eight public and private schools on the island. Daniela Rus became acquainted with the people of this island during her recent research work there with aquatic robots. The schools are generally not outfitted with computers, and they could benefit greatly from donations of re-usable technology.
