Accounts and Passwords

Sponsored Accounts

What is a "sponsored account"?

These accounts are for non-employees of the University, for instance

  • Visiting professors
  • Student clubs and associations
  • University affiliates
  • Convention delegates or special guests
  • University volunteers

How are these accounts created?

  1. The account request must be approved by a formal "requestor," that is, the dean or director or this person's delegate (administrative officer).

  2. The written request must include the following user information:

    • Sponsor's Name
    • Sponsor's Employee Number
    • User's name
    • User's address
    • User's telephone #
    • User's date of birth in the form YY MM DD (YY is the last two digits of the year, e.g. 1962 will be 62)

  3. The request must also include the shorter of these two account expiry dates:

    • The user's length of appointment
    • One calendar year

  4. The type of account requested (see the list of available accounts)

  5. All requests must then be submitted using our on-line Web request form at http://www.ccs.uottawa.ca/cybersos/

How is the account creation confirmed?

The following notice is sent to the person responsible for the account, along with a copy for the "requestor":

The creation of the following account : "userid" has been approved (the initial password "____________" must be changed for security reasons). Responsibility for the proper use of this account belongs to "account user's name," who must comply with the code of conduct located at http://www.uottawa.ca/help/about/code.html.

Changes to the account password can be made by the person responsible for the account, with the usual verification (name, date of birth, employee #, S.I.N. digits or generic ID number provided by the requestor) conducted by the Computing Help Centre staff.

The account expires on "as specified by the requestor", that is, the person having authorized the account's creation.

The account can be cancelled by either the requestor or the user.

Sponsored or departmental mailbox accounts do not include SLIP / PPP access /docs/slip-ppp.html.
