Welcome to the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is comprised of over 50 academic staff who are located within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa's Roger Guindon Hall campus, 451 Smyth Road, the new Ottawa Hospital, General, Civic and Riverside campuses as well as the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario at 401 Smyth Road. Many staff members at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute are also members of the Department and a number of researchers at Health Canada maintain adjunct status in the Department.
The Department contributes significantly to the new undergraduate curriculum in medical education both in lectures, laboratories, tutorials and electives. The Department administers five postgraduate residency training programs of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in General, Anatomical and Hematological Pathology; Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology. In 1994, a unique unit in forensic pathology was opened that in addition to performing medico-legal autopsies, brings together physicians, coroners, residents, police, law students and RCMP toxicologists in an educational environment. The Department hosts the national archives of the Canadian Reference Center for Cancer Pathology (CRCCP) one of the largest archives of tumour pathology in North America that holds tumour sectiond and information that date as far back as the end of the Second World War. In 1996 the Department opened a Tissue Plastination Facility (using silicon S-10 impregnation) which is now almost in full operation and prepares tissues and organs that are extensively used in medical teaching.
The Department also administers a collaborative graduate program in Pathology and Experimental Medicine. Many academic staff by virtue of cross appointments to several Basic Science Departments maintain membership in the School of Graduate Studies and Research.
