Placement test

Registration conditions for language courses

Placement test

If you do not have the course prerequisites or advanced standing, you must write a placement test. You will be placed at the level appropriate to your test results, subject to availability. Please note that this test is used for placement purposes only, and is not considered to be advanced standing in any course.

A placement test is available on-line for Arabic, Chinese, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish

To write a placement test in person for any of the languages offered by the Department (including the languages for which there is no on-line test, i.e. Italian, Polish and Portuguese), please visit the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures:

Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 noon
70 Laurier Avenue East, Room 134
Telephone: 613-562-5715
Fax: 613-562-5138
langmod@uOttawa.ca

Note

We may place you in another course more suited to your level of proficiency, based on the results of your placement test.

If you already have some proficiency in the language in question, you may write a placement test to be exempted from a given level.

Registration conditions for language courses

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures reserves the right to refuse registration in language courses to:

  • students who have attended high schools where the language of instruction is the same as the language taught in the course
  • students whose proficiency in the language exceeds the level expected in the course in question

If it becomes clear that a student registered in a course meets either of the above criteria, the student will be required to either withdraw from the course or take a placement test.

Students are not permitted to register in two courses at different levels in the same language during the same session. Students are not permitted to register in a course at a lower level than any successfully completed course in the same language.
