Preparation of an audition CD or tape

In keeping with professional standards of music performance, applicants are strongly urged to audition in person. Recorded auditions from students living far from Ottawa may be accepted in lieu of a personal audition. A subsequent interview by telephone with members of the School of Music may be required.

Note: String instruments: DVD format or video-tape only.

The following are general guidelines for the preparation of an audition CD or tape:

  1. Choose your repertoire from the requirements listed for your instrument. It is important to adhere to these criteria since different works show different aspects of training and musical development. If you need advice, consult your teacher.

  2. It is best to get help in making the recording, preferably from a recording engineer. The use of professional equipment will improve your chances of producing a CD or tape of good technical quality. Record the most difficult works first. If you require an accompanist, it is best to use a professional, preferably one you have used before and with whom you are comfortable.

  3. All CDs or tapes must be clearly marked and labeled (name, titles of works, etc.).

  4. Editing is not permitted.

Additional graduation requirement

All students of non-keyboard instruments must attain a reasonable level of piano proficiency before graduation, preferably during the first two years of their program. Tests are administered during each semester; students with RCMT Grade VI or equivalent will be exempted.

Accompanists

Students are expected to provide their own accompanist. You may bring your own accompanist or contact one of the following:
