Courses offered in the University of Ottawa’s Vered Jewish Canadian Studies Program 2011-2012
The following courses are offered through the Vered Jewish Canadian Studies Program. They may be taken as part of the minor in Jewish Canadian Studies or in conjunction with another program of study.
Unless otherwise indicated below, all courses are open to University students as well as members of the wider community. Community members may register for courses as special students for credit or as auditors. Auditors are authorized to register without obtaining credits and cannot write examinations or submit assignments.

Courses offered in Fall 2011
CDN1300: Introduction to Jewish Canadian Studies (3 credits)
Introduction to the interdisciplinary study of the Jewish experience in Canada, including discussion of scholarship in history, sociology, culture, literature and other areas.

CDN-ENG 3383: Jewish Canadian Writers (3 credits)
Focus on the major Jewish-Canadian writers of the past seventy-five years: A.M. Klein, Irving Layton, Miriam Waddington, Adele Wiseman, Mordecai Richler, Leonard Cohen and others, as well as work in translation by Yiddish-Canadian writers.

Courses offered in Winter 2012
CDN3102-A: Selected Topics in Jewish Canadian Studies: Canadian Responses to the Holocaust (3 credits)
Topic: Canadian Responses to the Holocaust
Discussion of the multifaceted Canadian responses to the Nazi Holocaust. Topics will include: antisemitism; government policies; community activism; literature and the arts; Holocaust survivors; Nazi war criminals; Holocaust denial; the evolution of public memory; and memorialization and Holocaust education.
*Prerequisite: CDN1300 or permission of the Program Coordinator, Seymour Mayne.

CDN3102-B: Selected Topics in Jewish Canadian Studies (3 credits)
Topic: Contemporary Canadian Jewish Life
Study of topics including immigration, ethnic integration, economic mobility, religious and secular bases of Jewish identity, communal structure, family, gender, sexualities and comparison with other ethnic groups.
*Prerequisite: CDN1300 or permission of the Program Coordinator, Seymour Mayne.

YDD2104: Introduction to Yiddish Literature and Film (3 credits)
A study of Yiddish literature and cinema in its major and minor centre worldwide. Discussion of major themes in Yiddish literary works and film as well as the social and cultural contexts behind their creation.
*No knowledge of Yiddish required.

A study of the beliefs, commandments, rites and traditions that form the Jewish religion.
YDD1901: Introduction to Yiddish Language and Culture I (3 credits)
A beginner’s study of the Yiddish language focused on the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in combination with a cultural component. This course is not open to auditors.
YDD1902: Introduction to Yiddish Language and Culture II (3 credits)
A more advanced study of the Yiddish language focused on the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in combination with a cultural component.
